What are Deinococcus radiodurans' beneficial factors?
D. radiodurans does not have many beneficial factors for plants, animals, fungi or even protista. However, scientists think that it could survive radiation filled space and the harsh conditions on Mars. If D.radiodurans were genetically altered it could make medicines humans need on mars to help make the martian environment more earth-like. On earth, scientists are currently designing variants of the bacteria that will thrive in toxic waste sites, and they are making mercury and toluene less dangerous substances. D. radiodurans can stabilze contaminated metals and organic compounds inorder to prevent them from getting further into the water supply and soil that is already contaminated by nuclear waste.
